Summary

From the bestselling author of the Detective Louise Blackwell series comes a story of two murders, twenty years apart。 There’s only one suspect。 But what if he’s innocent?

Twenty years ago, in the seaside town of Galveston, Texas, Annie Randall took her dog for a walk。 The dog returned。 Annie did not。 When her body was found, cruelly broken and posed like a runner, there was only ever one suspect: Annie’s husband, Frank。 Now he’s served his time and come home – but the locals won’t let him forget。 Especially when there’s a new ‘running girl’ murder…

Detective Laurie Campbell remembers Annie’s case。 She’s also married to the Randalls’ son。 Painfully conscious of the deep wounds within her family, and still suffering from a personal tragedy of her own, Laurie takes the lead on the new investigation。 As much as the finger of suspicion points to her father-in-law, something doesn’t add up。 If he didn’t commit the most recent murder, is it possible he never killed Annie either? And if he didn’t, who did?

As a terrifying hurricane hits Galveston, Laurie finds herself in a dangerous race against time。 Can she find the answers that could heal her broken family before the wind and the waves hide them forever?

First time reading this author, and it was a really good read! Fast paced, atmospheric in the midst of a hurricane, with plenty of twists and turns。 Thought I’d sussed out the murderer, but was wrong! Will be looking for more of Matt Brolly’s works!

interesting storyGood read, perhaps a little stretched in places but quick read。 I would definitely recommend if you like this genre

Compelling mystery but lengthy repetitive prose made me want to skim。 I liked the story but the character development felt forced and stilted even at the end。

This was such a great book ! I did not want to put it down ( until the last couple of chapters ) And this of course is my personal opinion but I think that the last chapters of the Detective trying to find people running around in the Hurricane was drug out really too long 。 ( Which is why I gave it 4 instead of 5 stars ) When the ending finally did happen … I was surprised。 The killer was not anyone that I had thought it might be 。 All the characters were amazingly believable to the “ real worl This was such a great book ! Hooked from the StartI really found myself engaged right from the start and read this in two sittings! Full of twists, well-written, and kept me changing my mind about the outcome all the way through the book。

I’d give this book 2。5/3 stars。 A fast-paced book but somewhat repetitive。 I did enjoy reading about Galveston as I just visited the city last year。 The twist at the ending wasn’t predictable, IMHO, but felt very far-fetched。

thought I knew where it was going, then … ooh! A little too wordy,,,Nice plot twist though。 Sure did conjure up good visuals of Galveston and a hurricane there。

3。5⭐️Oh where to start。 My review is going to make it sound like I didn’t like any of this book but I really did like it。 There was just sooooo much that it didn’t need。 •we get it。 Laurie hates her body。 She has muscle twinges that we do not need to know about。 None of this adds to the plot。•I don’t even understand the point of the Harringtons being a part of the story。 Other than the fact that there is a second murder why are they even in the story? What’s the point of talking about Glen’s creepy side with young girls? I know it’s to add another suspect to the story but it was kind of lame。•Same goes goes for the Tilly and Mia stuff。 The author just wanted to add a random gay character。 •The focus on the actual girls running being the reason for murder is mentioned so briefly I’m not really sure why it’s there & then the murderer just kills some randos for no reason? Overall it was a decent story。 Very ordinary。 The book was so close to being good on so many parts but just missed the mark on a lot。 It felt like the author was trying to squish in as many different plots as he could get。 Also I think he was close to his deadline and wrote the ending in an hour lol it was very abrupt and implausible。 。。。more

Surprise TwistAnyone who enjoys whodunit stories will like this book。 It's apparent from very early on that the man who had spent the last 16 years in prison for murder was not guilty of the crime。 I thought I had the guilty party identified only to find Brolly had added an unexpected twist that changed the remainder of the tale。 Though not among my favourite whodunit stories, I enjoyed the read。 Surprise TwistAnyone who enjoys whodunit stories will like this book。 It's apparent from very early on that the man who had spent the last 16 years in prison for murder was not guilty of the crime。 I thought I had the guilty party identified only to find Brolly had added an unexpected twist that changed the remainder of the tale。 Though not among my favourite whodunit stories, I enjoyed the read。 。。。more

This novel was pretty weak。 The lead character, Laura, a detective, was so whiny and repetitive that I almost stopped reading the book。 The storyline kept looping, as well, slowly inching forward。 None of the characters really grabbed me enough to care about them。 The detective work seemed shabby and untrue。 The climax also seemed false。 I know this author is touted as having high ratings and great appeal, but I won’t be bothering with any of his other books。

Susan Campbell

Good MysteryThis book told a good story but unfortunately for me it seemed a bit confusing, as if the author was trying to include too many stories in one book。 As a result I was lost a few times but Laurie and David felt like real people and their loss is one too often experienced。

Not bad。 This one held my interest and was fast-paced。 It was a little contrived, but I felt it was a good read in the end。

A Better BrilloMy earlier reading of Brillo books was satisfactory, but I thought this one was his best to date。 You never really knew who the perpetrator was until the big reveal。

This book has everythingI could not put this book down, the story had everything from a great twisting plot to drama and live。 I would definitely recommend。

Not just a mystery thriller, but an emotionally raw and gritty tale of love and loss between spouses and parents。 Well written and clean! Although intense!

A good thriller/mystery in the beginning。 The ending felt really forced and almost didn’t make sense。 I never could have guessed who the killer was, but almost in a bad way…it seemed really far-fetched。 The focus on Laurie’s constant exercising and her focus on her body also felt a little weird, it was talked about SO much that I started skimming over those parts。 Overall a decent read, but I was disappointed with the ending。

Excellent!!!This story could be, is a psychological murder mystery with an ending that caught me completely off guard。 The events leading to the Hurricane hitting Galveston, the characters' survival through the high winds and rising water gave me a perspective I've never had。I usually don't get sentimental when I read a book, but when Laurie and David were reunited in Chapter 41, it brought tears to my eyes。 I highly recommend this book! “The Running Girls” is a fairly ordinary thriller。 It does have a web of unusual relationships among victims and investigators。 So, one does want to see how that works out。 A hurricane plays a role in the ultimate resolution which adds some excitement, but also some not so believable actions by some of the characters。 The hurricane felt like a gimmick, but without it, the conclusion would have fallen a bit flat。 Still, reasonably entertaining。

Tracey

3。5 stars! A quick read with some good twists。 I loved the added stress of a hurricane to the end。。。made it intense and hard to put down。
